7 Reasons Why Active Vacations Are the Best Kind of Vacation

Truth be told, I’m not a person who likes to lounge at the beach or by the pool while on vacation. I can do it for a day or two but then get bored quickly. Maybe it’s because I’m fair skinned and sunburn easily! Maybe it’s because I can’t sit still! But seriously, when I look back on my travels, the most enjoyable and memorable, were vacations that surrounded around being active outdoors. Here are 7 reasons why active vacations are the best kind of vacation:

1. Learn Something New

Visiting new places and learning about other cultures is fascinating. It opens your mind and gives you a new perspective and appreciation of the world.

2. Experience Challenges & Adventures

Active travel allows you to try something new (ie. hiking, biking, skiing, whitewater rafting etc.) and pushes you out of your comfort zone. I’ve been on many trips that have pushed me to my limit!! Challenging me physically and mentally, which is a life changing experience.

3. Spend Time Outdoors

I spend much of my time indoors sitting behind a desk. So, when I’m on vacation, I love hiking, biking, skiing, camping and doing things I normally wouldn’t do in my daily life. For this reason, spending time out in nature and active outdoors is my main goal.

4. Meeting People

The chance to meet people from all over the world. Making connections and sharing experiences with people you otherwise would never have met, is a pretty cool thing.

5. Convenience

Many active travel vacations organized thru tour companies have everything planned out for you – meals, camping equipment, bikes, excursions etc. All you have to do is show up! Companies like Backroads or REI Adventures do this seamlessly. We have been on quite a few organized trips. It’s not cheap, but the convenience of the trip being planned out with all the equipment is priceless.

6. Health Benefits

Active vacations are good for the body and soul! Being outside in nature boosts physical and mental well- being. It gets you moving outdoors and is good for your health.

7. Sense of Accomplishment

The sense of accomplishment after a long hike or adrenaline rush after a mentally & physically challenging experience makes you feel alive. It’s a beautiful reminder of what we are all capable of!
