REI Hiking List: A Useful Guide
Whenever I start packing for a hiking or camping trip, I reference the REI Hiking List. It’s a useful guide that lists everything you need for your next adventure. The checklist features required and optional gear such as, clothing and footwear, food and water, emergency and personal items.
A few years ago, I was getting ready for a hiking trip to Banff, Canada. I left packing to the last minute and decided to pack what I needed by memory. Needless to say, once arriving in Banff, I realized key items I left behind…my rain gear, hat and gloves! A friend lent me her windbreaker, which I accepted, hoping for the best.
Two days into the trip, I clearly remember hiking from Lake Louise to the Lake Agnes Tea House when the weather took a turn for the worse. Before you knew it, we were caught in a bad thunderstorm, full of wind, rain and lightning. I carried on, eventually reaching the tea house, soaked and seeking shelter from the storm.
What did I learn from this experience?
1. Never rush to pack! Usually, I start gathering things together a few weeks before a big trip. Allowing enough time to figure out what things need to be replaced or bought before the trip.
2. I highly recommend following the REI Hiking List to ensure no important items will be forgotten.
TIP: Don’t skimp on gear! Stick with well-known brands when buying clothing for outdoor adventures. From socks, to base layers, to hiking boots and rain gear, it’s worth it to invest in these pieces because they perform well and stand the test of time.
So, before you set of on your next adventure, consider referencing the hiking list from REI. Their expert advice will ensure you are ready to take on the outdoors!
