Civita di Bagnoregio : Italy’s Dying City

Civita di Bagnoregio, also known as The City in the Sky, is one of the most beautiful towns in Italy. Founded over 2,500 years ago by the Etruscans, this city has been preserved since the Middle Ages. Listed below are the top reasons why you should visit:

It Won’t Be Here Forever

Known as the dying city (‘la città che muore’), Civita di Bagnoregio is thought to be 1/3 the original size. Each year the city loses about 7cm of land due to constant erosion. The decline started in 1695 when an earthquake hit. Over the years, earthquakes, landslides and erosion have left it vulnerable which is why it’s on the 100 most endangered sites list.

No Cars Allowed

Perched up high, you can only reach the village by footbridge, about a 10-minute walk uphill. No cars allowed here! Only 12 people live here but there’s no shortage of tourists. It’s one of Italy’s most popular places to visit as one million tourists visit per year.

Preserved City

Civita di Bagnoregio charges an entrance fee which goes towards preserving the town and fighting erosion. Thankfully, the medieval features of this ancient town have been preserved over the years.
