Best App to Divide Expenses: Splitwise

What’s the best app to divide expenses between friends or family? Splitwise! Take the guesswork out of who owes who by adding expenses to the app. Simply enter who paid for what and the cost. Splitwise will track what each person owes.

I’ve used Splitwise solely for travel expenses, but it can be used for anything that involves shared expenses such as, roommates splitting bills and more.

On my most recent trip to Colorado, I had reserved the lodging and car. Rather than exchanging money upfront, I entered these expenses in the app. When we went to dinner or bought other group essentials, the person who paid entered those expenses in the app.

As our trip ended, if there was money outstanding, we settled up (outside the app) at the end of the trip. If you prefer to pay people thru the app, you can enable Splitwise Pay. It allows you to enter your banking information and pay people thru the app. On the downside, the receiver of the money also has to enable this option in order to receive the money on their end. I have not used this option and prefer to settle up outside the app.
