Yellowstone: Ultimate Packing List for Kids

When we were planning our trip to Yellowstone this past summer, I knew I needed to to figure out the best items to pack for our kids. They grow out of things so fast and what fit last season, is now too small. Here’s my ultimate packing list for kids for your Yellowstone vacation:

Hiking Shoes

If you plan on hiking and walking a lot, the Keens Targhee Hiking Boot is an excellent choice. Initially, I was going to have them wear Keens sandals but am happy I bought them a proper hiking boot. The hiking boots offer good ankle support, traction and are waterproof. Also, the trails can be dusty and rocky, which help protect their feet.

Water Shoes

We swam in rivers a few times in Yellowstone and were happy we packed Keens Kids H2 Sandals. The bottom of the river is full of rocks and jagged edges. The shoes protect their feet, are quick dry and comfortable. They can also be worn as an everyday sandal.

Socks

Proper footwear is important, including the socks on your feet! If you want to avoid blisters and unhappy feet, DO NOT wear cotton socks. Look for a merino wool sock, such as Smartwool. This type of wool wicks sweat, is breathable, dries quickly and doesn’t smell after a day’s hike. It’s also soft and comfortable on the skin.

Day Pack

If you are looking for something lightweight for kids to carry on a hike, consider the Osprey Daylite Daypack. My kids carried snacks, water, a raincoat and sweatshirt if they got cold. It was the perfect size and weight for them to carry.

Swim Shorts

When I realized I forgot to pack my sons swim shorts, I was on the hunt for anything I could find. Luckily, I found the North Face Class V Water Shorts. They have UPF 50 protection, an elastic waist and are quick drying, which is what my son loves most about these shorts.

T-Shirts

Two words…NO COTTON! Look for athletic shirts that wick sweat and moisture. My son loves the Adidas Boys’ Stay Dry Moisture-Wicking Aeroready Short Sleeve T-Shirts. Perfect for the outdoors and comfortable too.

Mini Lantern

The Black Diamond Moji Lantern brings light to any situation. Small and portable, it’s ideal to use in a car, tent, tabletop or as a night light. It provides bright light with a dimming switch to adjust brightness. It also includes a collapsible hook for hanging.
